Motor Influences on Grammar in an Emergentist Model of Phonology
نویسندگان
چکیده
Any account aiming to provide a comprehensive picture of children’s acquisition of speech must consider both the development of the phonological grammar and the maturation of the structures and motor skills used to implement the sounds of a language. Much previous literature has been marked by a tendency to draw sharp demarcations between motor and grammatical inf luences, or to assert that all of child speech can be reduced to one or the other. This paper argues that it is neither necessary nor desirable to segregate speech-motor development from grammatical development when modeling speech acquisition, because they are fundamentally intertwined. The paper focuses on bringing together two literatures that have evolved largely independently. The first explores how speech-motor patterns practiced during babbling come to be disproportionately represented in the lexicon in children’s earliest stages of meaningful speech. The second posits that abstract elements of phonology – segments, features, and constraints – can be understood to emerge from generalizations over storedmemory traces at a more holistic level. We argue that an emergentist model of phonological learning can be enhanced by incorporating the insight that memory traces of strings that have been heard and produced are encoded more robustly than strings that have only been heard.

Estrogen agonist genistein differentially influences the cognitive and motor disorders in an ovariectomized animal model of Parkinsonism
Objective(s): Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder associated with motor disabilities and cognitive dysfunction as well. Evidence indicates that PD occurs less frequently in women than men, confirming a role for steroid hormones in protection of dopaminergic nigrostriatal neurons. It is reported that soy genistein, an estrogen agonist phytoestrogen, display neuroprote...
متن کاملThe A-map model: Articulatory reliability in child-specific phonology
This paper addresses two linked phenomena of longstanding interest: the existence of childspecific phonological patterns which are not attested in adult language, and the puzzling developmental trajectory of these patterns. While some child-specific phonological patterns wane gradually as the child matures, others follow a U-shaped curve, and still others persist unchanged for an extended perio...
متن کاملDiscovering a Language for Human Activity
We present a roadmap to a Human Activity Language (HAL) for symbolic manipulation of visual and motor information in a sensory-motor system model. The visual perception subsystem translates a visual representation of action into our visuo-motor language. One instance of this perception process could be achieved by a Motion Capture system. We captured almost 90 different human actions in order t...
متن کاملFinite-State Phonology In HPSG
Attention on constraint-based grammar formalisms such as Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) has focussed on syntax and semantics to the exclusion of phonology. This paper investigates the incorporation of a non-procedural theory of phonology into HPSG, based on the ‘one-level’ model of Bird & Ellison (1992). The standard rule-representation distinction is replaced by the description-ob...
متن کاملInventories in Functional Phonology*
Functional Phonology, which makes a principled distinction between articulatory and perceptual representations, features, and constraints, can describe as well as explain the symmetries as well as the gaps in inventories of vowels and consonants. Symmetries are the language-specific results of general human limitations on the acquisition of perceptual categorization and motor skills. Gaps are t...
